What would you take with you when you leave?
This project was created after I worked on a larger illustration-focused series on immigration. I realized after creating those five pieces, that I still had all this transcribed text from talking to people about their experiences.
This zine combines the narratives and histories of different people’s experiences across different times and locations. Each story is an individual section that can be pulled out of the elastic binding to view. When you unfold the chapter, one side is a map of that story’s regions and the other side contains the text. The zine is designed to be viewed as a map; it folds open to a large wingspan and can be read by rotating it as needed.
The typefaces for each story are from a foundry based in the country the story related to. There are elements of maps that frame the zine throughout. I also made custom stamps that mimick immigration stamps to date and number the each edition of the print.
